Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 20th of March.
Good morning, Farmington.
🎓 Education
Fabiola Cabeza de Baca spent 30 years as a home extension agent teaching food preservation and safety in remote villages, helping low-income families by translating government materials into Spanish.
Born near Las Vegas, she overcame poverty and a train accident in 1932—leaving a lasting legacy in New Mexico.
Mela Lucero Leger (an educator advocating bilingual learning) is honored today in La Loma with a roadside marker recognizing decades of work preserving language and culture, which helped pass the Bilingual Multicultural Education Act that allows schools to teach in Spanish and Indigenous languages with English.
🏥 Health
New Mexico expects record-breaking heat that feels like summer even though spring is not yet official, and health experts advise drinking water with electrolytes, wearing loose light-colored clothing, taking breaks in the shade, and using SPF 30 sunscreen (which can help prevent sunburn and heat stress) as a safety precaution.
