CULTURE NEWS

  • Al Hurricane Jr. died Tuesday at 66 — the New Mexico music icon left behind a legacy that touched fans statewide, including many in Farmington.  KOAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New Mexico has opened enrollment for its free Summer Reading Program for K-8 students, offering small-group literacy sessions led by trained instructors. The program (serving up to 10,000 students) will run in June and July at schools, libraries and community organizations.  KOAT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State wildlife officials urge residents to secure food and trash as bear activity increases with warmer weather. Campers, hikers, and homeowners are advised to keep areas clean and contact local wildlife officers if bears become a concern.  KOAT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham declared statewide drought and severe fire conditions on May 20 after historic low snowpack and record-high spring temperatures, directing agencies to provide timely resources and launching a new online drought portal.  KOAT
